James W. "Jim" Backlund

James W. “Jim” Backlund, 82, lifelong resident of Superior, WI died peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, October 21, 2021, at St. Mary’s – Miller Dwan in Duluth, MN. He was born in Superior, February 16, 1939, the son of Vernon C. Sr. and Astrid C. (Bergren) Backlund.

Jim graduated Central High School and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army.

Jim was united in marriage to Mary Kathryn Price on July 3, 1965 and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before his passing.

He worked as a crane operator with ABC-Naco for many years before his retirement.

Jim enjoyed deer hunting, gardening, metal detecting, and especially enjoyed fishing with his grandson, Derek. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Green Bay Packers, auto racing, and car shows. Above all, Jim was a family man. He loved spending time with his family, and he especially loved the holidays. Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kathryn Backlund, Superior; sons, Brian (Ruth) Backlund, Richard (Susan) Backlund, and David Backlund; grandchildren, Derek Backlund, Sarah (Jack) Sannes, step granddaughter, Kari Hufnagle; and step great-granddaughter, Neala Hufnagle.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vern Jr., Marvin, Dale, and Raymond Backlund; and sisters, Patsy Yadon (Thompson), Carol Jarzomski, Sandra Greely, Nancy Lee Backlund, Diane Allison, and Marla Ryan. And many nieces, nephews and friends from Griffin, Indiana.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, October 29, 2021, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5 ^th Street, Superior. The visitation will resume at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 30 ^th at the funeral home, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Service with Pastor Kurt Witzig officiating.
