Retired Major James “Jim” Timmerman, 65, Superior, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, MN, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jim was born on July 14, 1947 in Duluth, MN to Leo and Angeline Timmerman.
He was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral High School, Superior, Wisconsin. A gifted singer, he performed in several of the school’s musicals and played the King of Siam in school’s production of THE KING AND I. Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the high distinction of Eagle Scout.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1969 , where he was a member of the ROTC and the ROTC Drum & Bugle Corp.
He was a navigator/bombardier in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, seven Air Medals, and numerous other combat medals. His last military assignment was as a Major Plans Department Chair for NATO Exercises and War Plans, before retiring after 20 years of dedicated service to his country.
He loved to travel and experience all the world had to offer. One item on his bucket list that he was unable to fulfill was a cruise to the Panama Canal.
Jim worked for the United States Postal Service for over 15 years before retiring due to health concerns.
He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus.
Jim was an avid fisherman. He loved to fish, and he was very good at it. But, he hated to eat the fish after he caught them! He also loved to golf and spend time playing smear with his family.
He is survived by one daughter, Sarah (Don) Wallentiny, Rogers, MN; one son, Aaron Timmerman, Rosemount, MN; five grandchildren, ConorTimmerman, Dominic Shirley, Ashton Shirley, Anna Wallentiny, Leo Wallentiny; his mother, Angeline Timmerman, Superior; one sister, Maureen (Kenneth) Hensley, Apple Valley, MN; one brother, John (Marguerite) Timmerman, Auburndale, WI; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father Leo Timmerman.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 12, 2012, followed by a 2:00 PM Memorial Mass at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior, where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard and a private military burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia where military honors will also be accorded.
Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Jim’s grandchildren , Conor, Dominic, Ashton , Anna and Leo.
