James Thomas Ulvila

January 2, 1938 — June 27, 2016

James Thomas Ulvila, 78, longtime resident of Superior, WI, died Monday, June 27, 2016 in his home surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness.

James was born January 2, 1938 to August and Lorraine (Erkila) Ulvila, in Superior, WI.

He graduated from the former Central high school in 1956.

James served his country in the United States Air Force, and was employed through the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for over thirty years.

He married Phyllis Wallin on September 23, 1962. They celebrated 31 years of marriage before her passing in 1993.

James was a member of The United Postal Letter Carriers Union #337 and the Superior Bowling Association.

He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, he enjoyed the Brewers, Badgers and Nascar. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and loved spending time with his family and friends at the cabins in Gordon and Barnes, WI. He also loved a good game of pool and was a model maker.

James is survived by his daughter, Debra (Bob Rinnet) Soyring, Superior, WI; two sons, Bradley Ulvila, Superior, WI and Brett (Julie) Ulvila, Superior, WI; four grandchildren, Lona (Dani Kunza) Sullivan, Justin (Shannon) Sullivan and Kristina and Matt Poverud; three great-grandchildren, Devon, Isabelle and Daniel; his sister, MaryAnne (Jim) Collins, Superior, WI; brother, Kenneth Ulvila, Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Gene Ulvila and Donald Ulvila; his wife Phyllis Ulvila (Wallin) and daughter Brenda Koons.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 9 th 2016 and continue until the 2:00 PM memorial service in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Inurnment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior at a later date..

James will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Jim’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital Hospice Unit, Duluth, MN, for the wonderful care Jim received throughout his illness.
