Janet E. Hughes, 77, longtime Superior resident, died Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. She was born in Belvidere, IL, October 30, 1941, the daughter of Werner Wenske and Virginia (Meyers) Henefelt
Janet married Robert Hughes in Superior, August 17, 1963, and they were to celebrate fifty-six years of marriage this summer.
She moved to Solon Springs at an early age and graduated St. Croix High in 1959. She attended nursing training and became an LPN at St. Joseph’s Nursery, and then became a homemaker, after that she worked at Prange Way and Target. She was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and their Altar Society.
Among her pleasures were baking treats for the staff at the Dialysis Center where she was a patient for 16 years, hosting holiday gatherings at her home, working at church, spoiling her grandchildren, being the matriarch of a large extended family, and taking trips anywhere, anytime.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Sr., Superior; sons, Robert T. (Tenley) Hughes Jr., Minneapolis, MN, Matthew (Toni Marie) Hughes, Slinger, WI, Stephen (Laura) Hughes, North Olmsted, OH, and Adam (Nicole) Hughes, South St. Paul, MN; daughter, Jennifer Hughes, Superior, WI; eleven grandchildren, Rachael (James), Greta, Griffith, Emma, Ashley (Anthony), Alexandria, Mackenzie (James), Madison, London, Fletcher and Triphon; 2 great-grandchildren, Beckham and Ariana; brother, Wayne (Pat) Wenske, Viroqua, WI; sister, Katie Nikola, Madison, WI; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Jeanne Esther Johnson.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the St. Mary’s Comfort Care staff, and a special thanks to Linda Trepanier, one of her other children.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 4, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 E. 4 th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
