Jeanne Elizabeth Cumming, aged 98, passed away on September 16, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Hermantown, Minnesota, while under the care of CaringEdge Hospice. She was born in Hankinson, North Dakota, on September 26, 1925, to Carl and Cecilia Krause. She was a resident of Superior, Wisconsin, for 48 years, and a longtime member of Cathedral of Christ the King, living out her final years in Duluth, Minnesota.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, John; her daughter Betty; four brothers, Howard, Warren, Stuart and Chester, several sisters-in-law; and a son-in-law, David Anderson.
Jeanne graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Home Economics. She and her husband, John, both educators, started out their careers and married life working for the Alaskan Native Service in Kwigillingok, Alaska, organizing the educational program there. From there, they moved to Seattle and then Montana, where they raised their 5 children. Jeanne travelled to many locations around the globe with her husband, among those Alaska, Iran, Egypt, and Indonesia, where her husband was employed.
Jeanne was a kind and compassionate person always willing to care for her grandchildren in their early years. She was a person of deep faith and said the rosary daily. She enjoyed playing bridge and bingo with her friends, sitting down with some popcorn and a good movie, going out to eat, cooking good meals and getting together with family and friends at the lake cabin in Northwestern Wisconsin.
She is survived by four children, Nancy (Jim) Amundson of Louisville, Kentucky, Laura (Paul Schneider) Star of Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin, Mary Courage (David “Drew” Anderson, deceased) of Duluth, Minnesota, and Robert Cumming (Diane Cook, a close family friend) of Santa Barbara, California; three brothers, Ray, Ken and Joe Krause; grandchildren Theresa Matuszak, Thomas Amundson, Robert Saetham, Mary Saetham, Kelly Ryberg, and Jon Anderson; and great grandchildren Emily Conover, Alec, Andrew and Elise Matuszak; Quinn and Sonia Saetham; and Locke, August and Whitaker Moulton; and great great grandchildren Campbell and Caroline Conover; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Superior and continue until the 11:00 am Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Superior. Jeanne’s grandchildren, Theresa Matuszak, Thomas Amundson, Robert Saetham, Mary Saetham, Kelly Ryberg and Jon Ray Anderson will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to especially thank Edgewood Assisted Living and CaringEdge Hospice of Hermantown, Minnesota, for their kind and compassionate care in Jeanne’s final days. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Cathedral of Christ the King, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
