Jerome Richard Olson

Jerome “Jerry” R. Olson, 89, passed away unexpectantly on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his residence in Superior, WI. Jerry was born on July 3, 1934, to Edwin and Helen Olson.

Jerry and his older brother Ronald were raised in a loving home by their mother and grandmother in a simpler time of Superior’s Birch Street area when it was not uncommon to raise livestock or chickens on a lot.

Jerry attended St. Stanislaus Primary School and graduated from Superior Cathedral High School in 1952.

He worked for the Great Northern Railroad on a section crew for a period of time before joining the United States Army serving as a combat engineer and honorably discharged in 1958.

Jerry married Helene Irwin on October 13, 1962. Together they had two sons and made their home in Superior. Jerry began a career working as an engineer technician with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation crisscrossing Northern Wisconsin reporting and assessing roadways. In his travels Jerry explored the beauty of Northern Wisconsin deepening his love for the outdoors. Jerry loved to hunt, fish and camp with family and friends. Together with childhood friend John Post, Jerry continued to stay active in hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. Jerry also loved feeding birds and the many small creatures that visited his back yard.

Jerry is survived by his brother, Father Ronald Olson of Superior; Helene Olson, Cornell, WI; sons: Steven (Karen Kucera) of South Range, Ron (Chris) Olson of Yoder, CO; grandchildren: Kimberly (Chris) Coupal, Matthew (Rebecca Lucero) Olson, and Ronald “RJ” Olson; great grandchildren: Colton Coupal, Cody Coupal, and Rowan Lucero-Olson all of Colorado. Jerry is survived by extended family Joanne Kuberski (aunt) and cousins: Diane (Will) Cossairt, Bonnie (Thom) Schrampfer, Julie Kuberski, and Craig (Gin) Kuberski all from the Twin Cities area. Jerry is also survived by his special friend and partner in crime Barbara Chicras who together shared many adventures and happy memories.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Olson and mother Helen Olson and his uncle Herman Kuberski.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Monday, January 22, 2024, at St Francis Catholic Church, 2316 E. 4th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial. Rev. Fr. James Tobolski and Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson will concelebrate the Mass.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Superior, WI.
