Jo Ann Miller

May 1, 1953 — September 19, 2016

Jo Ann (Karling) Miller, 63 years young, died peacefully Sept. 19, 2016, with her family by her side at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, MN.

Jo Ann was born on May 1, 1953, in Superior and was given a second chance at life on May 1, 2005, when she received a double lung transplant.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Lorraine Karling. She was a lifelong Superior resident and graduated from Superior Senior High in 1971.

Jo Ann worked for the BN Railroad for over 20 years. She then was a medical transcriptionist at St. Luke's Hospital for many years. She recently officially retired and enjoyed a few short weeks of retirement.

Jo Ann was known for her unique sense of humor and unconditional devotion to her family. Holidays and family gatherings will never be quite the same as she was "the fun one."

Jo Ann was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church. She volunteered in the activity department of Superior Rehabilitation Center. She belonged to the "E and D" Club (Eat and Drink) with special friends. She was a "semi-professional gambler" who enjoyed family trips to the casino, her Euchre card group, and hosting the annual Donna Noble Poker tournament at her home. Her Naranon Group provided her friendship, support, and peace.

Jo Ann was grateful everyday for her donor and his/her family. She enjoyed over 11 years of good health watching with pride as her grandson, Joey, grew up.

At her request, her body was donated to Education and Research at the University of MN.

She has now been reunited with family and friends who preceded her in death including: father, Joseph Karling, mother, Lorraine (Tylenda) Karling, and her grandparents.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Stacey Miller; grandson, Joey Miller; sister, Rita (John) Wallin; brother, Tim Karling; special nephews, Scott (Heather) Wallin and Brian (Carrie) Wallin and family, "granddoghter", Milly, and special cousins and friends.

Her family would like to especially thank all the doctors who cared for Jo Ann over the last 11 years and St. Luke's ICU doctors and nurses who made her last days comfortable.

Celebration of life and time of remembrance: 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Epic Restaurant. Family graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
