Joanne and John W. Gidley were married July 27, 1957, at St. Francis Xavier Church. They were married 47 years before his passing on November 5, 2005.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic parish, a Eucharistic Minister at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Superior and was a reporter for the Catholic Herald newspaper from 1955 to 1958. Taking time to raise her family, she then became a secretary/bookkeeper for the S.S. Meteor Maritime Museum in 1977. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Head of the Lakes Maritime Society Ltd and salesperson at the former Kinder Haus. As Office Manager and Tourism Coordinator of the Superior/Douglas County Chamber of Commerce from 1984 to 1997, she was instrumental in revitalizing the Superior/Douglas County Sports Hall of Fame and seeking a new site for the organizations plaque display at Superior High School. She retired and worked part-time at PD Advertising.

Joanne was devoted to her family and took great pride in their accomplishments. A people person, her interests included reading, writing, needlework, playing bridge, and communicating with friends and relatives via mail, email, or her annual “Gidley Gazette” Christmas letter. She enjoyed her home and well-known collection of all things’ butterflies. Traveling on “history treks” throughout the United States and to Rome, Italy with her husband and her trip to Belgium with her son, Matthew, was especially memorable.
