John M. Deterling, Sr., 90, resident of Poplar, WI, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Villa Marina Nursing Home in Superior, WI.
He was born in Superior on April 4, 1933, the son of John A. and Phoebe (Carlson) Deterling.
He served his country honorably in the United States Army. After his service he had a trucking company and then a gas station in Waukegan, IL. He later had a CASE Farm Implement dealership in Poplar, eventually he went back to truck driving with Northland Transport and then retired from Monson Trucking, Duluth, MN.
He was a lifelong member of the Mission Covenant Church and was grandson of the first Pastor, Pastor Carl J. Carlson.
In the summer months he spent most of his time on various golf courses in the area and was in four golf leagues.
Fall and winter months he enjoyed working on snowmobile trails and snowmobiling. He was a member of the Brule River Riders snowmobile club and Northwest Trails Association, holding offices in both groups.
He was involved with the Poplar American Legion and was a former member of the Poplar-Wentworth Lions Club.
Above all John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be missed by his wife Shirley; son John, Jr. (Brenda) Deterling, Poplar; Daughter-in-law Jeaneth Deterling, Duluth, MN; grandchildren Brianna, Ian, and Benjamin Deterling; great-grandchildren Nikole, Kaiden, and Melody; sisters Rae (Jerry) Jackson, Iron River, WI, Mary (Dave) Nelson, LaCrosse, WI, and Judy (Bob) Klein, Mooresville, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Verna (Helsius) Deterling, sister Doris (Ward) Bergren, daughter Debra Lynn Deterling, son Harold Deterling.
Visitation will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Mission Covenant Church, 5161 S. County Rd. P in Poplar, WI, and will continue until the Memorial Service at 2:00 PM with Pastor James Walsh officiating.
Burial will be in Poplar Cemetery at a later date.
