John Penney

John F. Penney (aka Mr. Wonderful), 69, lifelong Superior area resident, died Friday, January 8, 2016 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minnesota after a courageous battle with ALS .

He was born in Superior, WI on August 31, 1946 the son of Frank and Anne (Zowin) Penney.

He spent his entire life in the car business. He could be found at the auto parts store, his garage or an auction.   John built his first classic car at the age of thirteen.

John served his country in the United States Army and served in the 5 ^th Infantry Division.

John is survived by seven children, Lori (Dave) Pollock, Chris (Ashley) Penney, both of Superior, WI, Wendy (Joe) Johnson, Blaine, MN, Shawn (Nina) Penney, Sara (Andy) Edge, Jason (Katie) Penney, Jessica (Vince) Lia, all of Superior, WI; eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his former wife and mother of his children, Toni Penney; two brothers, David (Darla) Penney, Superior, WI and Frank Penney Jr., Mesa, AZ and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends and relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior and continue until the 6:00 PM Memorial Service with Rev. Father Jim Tobolski, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at a later date.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard at the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home following the Memorial Service.

The family would like to thank the Solvay Hospice House, St Mary’s Essentia Health, Dr. Amber Erickson, and the VA Hospital for their wonderful care of John.
