John F. "Tiny" Schweiger

June 18, 1939 — October 16, 2020

John F. “Tiny” Schweiger, 81, longtime Superior resident, formerly of Iron River, WI died peacefully, Friday, October 16, 2020 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN with family by his side. He was born in Superior, June 18, 1939 the son of Melvin and Erma (Miller) Schweiger.

He graduated from the former Central High School in Superior, class of 1957.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Nys May 24, 1969 and they celebrated fifty-one years of marriage before his passing.

Tiny served his country honorably in the United States Army National Guard. He continued to serve his community as a patrol officer with the Superior Police Department, retiring after twenty-four years of dedicated service.

He was a member of the Iron River Lions Club and the Day Breakers Lions Club in Lake Havasu, AZ; the American Legion in Iron River, and the Nemadji Mens Golf Club. He was a founding member of the Dirty Dozen hunting lodge in Solon Springs, and was also a member of the Belgian Club in Superior.

Tiny loved golfing and deer hunting. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino. He especially loved being a snowbird in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

One of his most memorable experiences was joining his son on a “Tiger” cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. He met the ship in Hawaii and sailed to their home port in California. Above all, he loved spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Tiny is survived by his wife, Barbara, Superior, WI; son, Thomas Schweiger, Superior, WI; daughter, Kelly (Chris) Rogge, Brooklyn Park, MN; grandchildren, Grace, Anna, and Adam Rogge; his twin sister, Joan Anderson, Cable, WI; brothers, Jerry (Peggy) Schweiger, Spring, TX, and Jeff (Kathy) Schweiger, Green Bay, WI; sister, Julie (Butch) Grondahl, Menahsa, WI; brother-in-law, Gordy (Pam) Nys; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Schweiger; and brother-in-law, James “Jim” Anderson.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, on Monday, May 24, 2021 in Veterans Memorial Park at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior. Pastor Darrell Kyle of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon will officiate, and Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

A Celebration of Tiny’s Life will follow at VIP, 1201 Tower Avenue, Superior, from 12:30-3:00 PM. Masks will be required.

Should friends desire, memorial may be made in Tiny’s name to the Salvation Army, 916 Hughitt Avenue, Superior, WI 54880.
