Jonathan R. Mencel

May 27, 1984 — December 17, 2021

J onathan Robert Mencel, 37, passed away peacefully with his loving family present, his mother holding his hand, on December 17, 2021 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul from complications of the Covid-19 virus.

Jonathan was born on May 27, 1984 in Superior, WI.  He graduated from Superior Senior High School in 2002. While in high school he was awarded the President’s Award for Academic Excellence. He then earned his bachelor of science degree in Legal Studies and Political Science and was awarded the Chancellor’s Leadership Award from UW-Superior in 2006. He went on to Hamline University School of Law where in 2009, he obtained his Juris Doctor and Certificate in Conflict Resolution.

At the time of his passing, he was an Attorney at the McSweeney/Langevin Law Firm in Minneapolis since 2017.  He previously worked at the Charles Johnson Law Firm in New Brighton.

He was named a Rising Star by Minnesota Super Lawyers in 2018, 2019, and 2020.  He was also listed in the 2020 edition of Who’s Who in America.

Jonathan was kind, loving, caring, generous and always willing to help out whenever or wherever he could, especially in his church where he loved serving and was recently ordained a Deacon.  He was a member of the Church of God, AWA in West St. Paul.

His sense of humor, smile and laughter brought so much joy to those who knew him.  He was a wonderful son and a great big brother.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and serving in his local church congregation.  He enjoyed indoor/outdoor activities such as golf, fishing, reading, music and to travel.  He loved movies of all genres, especially the Star Wars series.  He also loved to grow indoor plants in his office, share his exotic wines and scotches and his home brewed beer with family, friends and co-workers.  He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (got that from dad) and a devoted Vikings fan (got that from mom).

Jonathan will be dearly missed by his parents Robert and Laurie Mencel, Superior, sister, Kristina Mencel also of Superior, and his aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Alvin Miller Jr, Peter Mencel Sr, Clara Miller, Elaine Mencel, aunt, Gail Smerdon and uncle, Alvin Miller.

His family thanks all the doctors, nurses and staff at Regions Hospital for the excellent care they provided Jonathan during his stay.

A private family service will be held locally, and a Memorial will be held in the Twin Cities, both at a later date.
