Jordith A. Sloan

February 14, 1937 — May 2, 2025

Jordith Ann Sloan, 88, lifelong resident of Superior, WI, passed away at Dove Healthcare in Superior, WI, on Friday, May 2, 2025. She was born to Bernard and Esther (Swanlund) Pedersen on February 14, 1937, in Superior, WI.

Jordith grew up in South Superior where she attended Bryant Elementary School. She made lifelong friendships in her early years, many of whom she kept in contact with until just prior to her passing. She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1955. Right after, she moved to Duluth, MN and begin her nursing education at St. Luke’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1958. Eventually, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Administration from The College of Saint Francis. She moved to New York State in 1960, where she continued her career in nursing until she moved back to Superior in 1965.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Sloan in June of 1970. They celebrated ten wonderful years of marriage together before his passing in 1980. Ken was the love of Jordith’s life. Together, they built a wonderful life. They spent countless hours remodeling the cabin on Amnicon Lake, while raising their children. After her husband’s passing, Jordith, Julie, and Kevin spent every summer at “the lake,” as she called it. She loved being there with her children and mother, Esther, spending time gardening, hosting family and friends, taking trips to Hayward, visiting Anna Gene Park, and attending Tri Lakes Civic Club events. A strong, independent woman who was dedicated to raising her children as a single mother, she was very devoted to her friends and community. A warm, loving person who always saw the best in people, she was known for being a wonderful listener. She loved to travel and learn – reading nursing journals, taking classes, reviewing information in books, and from others.

Dedicated to the profession of nursing, Jordith’s nursing career spanned 50 years. When she returned to Superior in 1965, she began working at Superior Memorial Hospital. She held various roles while working there - Assistant Director of Nursing, Assistant Instructor of Nurses, and Inservice Training Coordinator. She was instrumental in starting the Cardiac Care Unit there, while staying involved in many nursing seminars and serving as a mentor for high school students who were contemplating careers in nursing. Jordith was a practical nursing instructor for Superior Vocational School and taught medical terminology and nursing assistant courses at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. She was employed at St. Frances in the Park for many years as the night supervisor, eventually retiring in 2008. She continued to maintain contact with her alma maters through their alumni associations.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for many years and then joined Faith United Methodist Church. Jordith was dedicated to serving our Lord through many ministries – United Methodist Women, Sunday School Superintendent, Joy Circle, and Administrative Board.

Jordith is survived by her daughter, Julie (Jeff) Kantarik, Superior; son, Kevin (Toby) Sloan, Iron River, WI; grandchildren: Tyler, Kaileigh, Kirsten, Callie, and Kaden; and several wonderful nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her family and friends who shall dearly miss her.

Jordith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; and sister, Karen Johnson.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Dove Healthcare, Essentia Health Elder Care program, and Essentia Health Hospice Program for the excellent and holistic care they provided to Jordith.
