Joseph N. Huber, 65, longtime Superior resident, passed away peacefully after a seven month battle with small cell lung cancer surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Villa Marina Health & Rehabilitation Center in Superior.
He was born on November 6, 1944 in Superior, WI to Clarence and Evelyn (Bales) Huber.
He graduated from the former Cathedral High School and served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam War era.
He was employed as a switchman/ brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad for many years.
Joe married Roberta “Bobbie” Blair in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church on September 6, 1969 and they celebrated forty years of marriage.
Joe attended Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and was a member of the United Transportation Union and the Knights of Columbus.
Joe loved spending time at Twin Bear Campground in Iron River, WI during the summer months and during the winter months at Landmark and Village Bowling Lanes. He enjoyed his years coaching youth basketball and loved youth sports. He was an avid fan of UMD, UWS and Superior High School Hockey and Basketball. He also was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.
In addition to his wife Roberta, Joe is survived by three daughters, Krista (Adam Ault) Huber and Amy (Keith Bailey) Huber, both of Iron River, WI; and Marie (Soderlund) Huber, Blaine, MN; son, Thomas “TJ” (Shelley Meyer) Huber, New Richmond, WI; grandchildren, Amber, Torrian “Tory” and Chase Huber; sister, Kathryn “Kay” Byrnes, Circle Pines, MN; brother-in-law, Greg (Sonya) Blair, Lake Nebagamon, WI; sister-in-law, Jean Kauti, Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews and his faithful canine companion, Allie Ann.
He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son Christopher Huber and infant sister Marjorie.
The family would like to extent their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff at Villa Marina Health & Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care they offered Joe during his stay at Villa Marina. Joe’s family would also like to offer a special thanks to Mike, Cheri, Lisa and Kim for their never-ending support and friendship.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 23, 2010 in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior. Visitation will resume at 10:00 AM on Monday and continue until the 11:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home with Rev. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post #1091 and
Richard I. Bong, American Legion Post #435 Combined Color Guard.
Pallbearers for the service will be Bill Gedde, Mike Campy, Mike Meyers, Rodney Maywall, Tim Kotter and Sandy Berg.
