Karyn L. Byrnes

Karyn L. Byrnes, 79, lifelong Superior resident, died Friday, November 16, 2018 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN, surrounded by her loving family following a three year battle with cancer. She was born in Superior, June 5, 1939, the daughter of Harold W. “Sonny” and Kathryn “Cass” (McGinnis) Benner.

She graduated from the Cathedral High School in Superior, class of 1957, and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin Superior.

Karyn married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Byrnes in Superior, July 13, 1957, and they celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before her passing. She worked for many years as a secretary with the City of Superior Finance Department. Prior to that, she worked as a legal secretary for Bob Gee in Superior, was a secretary for the Sooline Railroad, the Downs Funeral Home, and was a secretary and realtor for Lil Stocke and Messina Zunich Realtors. She also previously worked with Jan Baker Interior Design.

Karyn’s greatest passion in life was interior decorating. She loved purchasing, remodeling, and redecorating homes with her husband “Dick” before moving on to the next challenge. She also enjoyed playing cards with her lady friends at bridge club, and in her earlier years, singing and playing guitar.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Byrnes, Superior; daughters, Deb (Randy) Else, Linda Byrnes, both of Superior, and Sandra “Sandy” Byrnes, Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters, April Patterson, Minneapolis, MN, and Raquel Else, Superior, WI; and sister, Jill Larson, Duluth, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 23, 2018, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 E. 4 ^th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial, with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
