Katherine T. Schulz

Katherine Teresa Schulz, 91, lifelong resident of Superior, WI, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, with family by her side. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed. Her intelligence, creativity, strength, and quiet humor were admired by all who knew her.

Katherine was born in Superior on December 30, 1932, the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Bielmeier) Lamont. She graduated from Central High School in 1951 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

In 1954 Katherine was married to John Joseph Schulz. They enjoyed 32 years together and raised six children before John's passing in 1986.

In 1978, Katherine began work as a graphic designer for the Superior Evening Telegram. Her love of cooking lead her to write a cooking column for the paper for several years during that time. After her retirement from the Telegram in 1993, she became a founding member of the Friends of the Superior Public Library and remained an active and energetic board member for many years.

Katherine valued education and the Arts throughout her life, passing that love on to her children. She was a great reader of fiction, history, and poetry, and belonged to a book club with dear friends for close to 30 years. She loved to attend operas, classical and choral music performances, and theater productions. She was an art lover who would spend many happy hours wandering through museum galleries. Katherine was a talented watercolor painter herself, and as a young woman attended classes taught by Tony Yaworski. An avid gardener, Katherine took great joy in nurturing a beautiful flower garden in the backyard of her well-loved home for over 60 years.

She is survived by her children, John Michael (Therese Zemlin) Schulz, St. Paul, MN, Lisa Ann Schulz, Mankato, MN, Paul Joseph Schulz, Minneapolis, MN, Jerome Vincent (Michelle) Schulz, Superior, WI, Barbara Jo (Deborah Balzer) Schulz, Minneapolis, MN, and Christa Jean (John Todd Higgins) Schulz, Duluth, MN; grandchildren, Angela, John, Christine, Teresa, and Scott Schulz; and several great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, her brother, William Lamont, her sister, Martha (Lamont) Moesenthin, and her parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Service with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci officiating.

The burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior at a later date.
