Kenneth M. Mertz, age 84, of Superior died Monday, February 18, 2019 at the Mayo Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He was born January 6, 1935 in Superior, the son of the late Clarence Mertz and Inez Wells. Kenneth married Shirley Hill in 1955 and they raised three children.
He worked for Fagerlin Fuel and volunteered for the Wascott Fire Department and Zion Mission Program. He enjoyed family gatherings at his home on Whitefish Lake and was a handy man for all; especially with being foreman for building projects. He was never idle and helped others doing volunteer work for community, family, and friends. He was a master planner and was admired by all for what he
could do. Most of all he loved his family and friends and told them this with words and actions. He also loved animals, especially his pampered Yorki named Lily. He was an avid swimmer and played fast pitch softball.
He is preceded in death by parents; brother, Clarence Mertz, Jr; sisters, Carol Johansen, Diane Nelson and Joan Severin.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, his children, Sonja (Steven) Lamppa of Saginaw, MN, Kenneth (Pamela) Mertz Superior, and Terriann (Brad) Carlson Gordon, WI., grandchildren, Craig Nelson, Keith Nelson, Lucas (Lindsay) Mertz, Kendra Mertz (Chris Rogers), Andrea (Joel) Vlaminck, Delia (Ryan) Durfee, Reece Lamppa, John (Kristina) Carlson, Jenny Carlson and Jed Carlson; along with several greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was also survived by sister, Irene (Brad) Hillstrom-Haugen; and sister-in-law, Lillian Lange.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and Mayo Hospital for their excellent care.
Funeral is at Zion Lutheran Church, 2022 East 2nd Street, Superior, Wisconsin on Friday February 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Pastor Victor St. George will officiate.
