Laura Lee West

Laura Lee West, 74, longtime Superior resident died peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. She was born on June 10, 1941 in Duluth, MN to Raymond and Alice (Collins) Nieman.

She graduated from the former Central High School and she received her BA in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Laura was the owner/operator for forty-two years of Laura’s Southwest Junction formerly known as the South Pole. She previously worked at the East End Café, Old Town Bar and Restaurant and Tobies in Hinckley. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bingo, cribbage and having coffee with friends. She loved being in business and serving her customers. She was an avid Green Bay Packers and NASCAR fan.

Laura is survived by one daughter, Cindy West, Gordon, WI; one son, James West, Jr., Superior, WI; eight grandchildren, Troy (Abby) Katzmark, Superior, WI, Marley West, Edina, MN, Jesse (Heidi) West, Kent, WA, Kayla Capuzzi, Superior, WI, Kassie Capuzzi, Minneapolis, MN, Tyler, Trevor and Austin West, all of Superior, WI; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Charlie, Hanna, Aiden and Skyler; two sisters, Rose Tarnowski, Duluth, MN and Roberta (Gary) Johnson, White Bear Lake, MN; one brother, John (Gloria) Nieman, Saginaw, MN; her former husband and father of her children, James (Jean) West, Sr., Poplar, WI; close friend and cousin, Doreen Axell, Mounds View, MN and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Joel Nieman.

A Time of Remembrance and Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at the Belgium Club, 3931 E. 2 ^nd Street, Superior.

The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospice for the wonderful care given to Laura.
