Laverne Kurtz

LaVerne Kurtz, 95, lifelong Superior resident, passed away peacefully at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior on Monday, December 9, 2013, with a daughter holding each hand.

She was born on May 26, 1918 in Superior to Frank and Alice (Mason) Jolicoeur, the second of eight children.

She married Erwin A. Kurtz of Superior on April 28, 1936, and spent her life as wife, homemaker and mother to their 11 children.

She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

She is survived by 10 of her children: daughters Nancy (Bud) Byrnes of New Brighton, MN; Karen (Tom) Budnick of Fridley, MN; Judy (Darrell) Smith, Kansas City, MO; Bonnie (Dale) Trolson and Mary (Doug) Score, both of Superior; and Lori Benson of Atlanta, GA; and sons, George of Anchorage, AK; Ken (Becky Provost) of Palm Springs, CA; Tom (Mary Lou Koenig) and Ed (Rita Ramel), both of Superior; two sisters, Angel Loveland of Kansas City, MO; and Sally Realy of Hesperia, CA.

LaVerne will be kept busy watching over her 36 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Erwin, on July 3, 1998; one son, Daniel (Patty Jo Madlik) on June 11, 2011; her parents; three sisters; three brothers; a grandson and one great-grandson.

The family is being assisted by the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home where a visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 5:00 PM with a Scripture Service at 6:30 PM.

Visitation will continue at 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Allouez prior to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM followed by interment at St. Francis Cemetery. Celebrating the mass will be Rev. Fr. Sangmoon Kim and Rev. Fr. Lee Flaherty.

Pallbearers for the service will be seven grandsons, Matt and Corey Verdoljak, Jerry and Tom Kurtz, Doug Byrnes, Dennis Kurtz and Kris Benson.
