LaVonne Ann Garin, 88, long time Superior resident, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, surrounded with love from her family. She was born in Chetek, WI on December 8, 1934, the daughter of Emily and Charles Wasko.
LaVonne graduated from St. Croix High School, class of 1952. She married Larry Garin on May 11, 1952, in Solon Springs, WI. With twenty dollars and a suitcase in hand, they took a bus to Superior, WI to begin their lifelong journey together. They raised five children with perseverance and the importance that family always, always came first.
LaVonne was a strong, caring, independent, self-employed individual that enjoyed selling monuments for over 35 years. Her work can be seen throughout cemeteries in Douglas County and neighboring communities. Until her retirement at the age of 85, her impeccable work ethic prevailed. Her passion for extensive genealogy research united families near and abroad. She enjoyed many travels and boating adventures on Lake Superior with her husband. She loved crossword puzzles and could easily breeze through an entire book in a matter of days. LaVonne was a wonderful cook, and her meals were enjoyed by many even though she usually proclaimed, “It’s not like I usually make it”. Most of all, she loved her family and was very proud of them. Her home is adorned with photographs and precious creations from her great-grandchildren.
“If you’re going to live, leave a legacy, make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.” Maya Angelou.
Lavonne is survived by her children, Kathy Garin, Terry Garin, Kim Barker, Kelly Giles and son-in-law Michael Giles; grandchildren Rachel Young (Jason), Shane Giles (Melissa), Jena Barker and Jamie Barker; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Young, Stella Young, Audra Barker and Rory Giles, her siblings, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry Garin and son Larry Garin, Jr.
A private family burial will take place.
A Celebration of Life for LaVonne will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the St. Croix Inn in Solon Springs from 11:30-2:30, where all are welcome to join.
