Lawrence “Larry” W. Smith, 82, lifelong East End Superior resident, died Sunday, April 16, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice Unit in Duluth, MN.
He was born in Superior, WI on January 15, 1935 to Robert and Ida (Ghroeler) Smith.
Larry graduated from the former Cathedral High School.
He was employed at Superior Water, Light and Power as a credit coordinator for many years.
He married Carol Gucinski on October 12, 1957 and they celebrated fifty-nine years of marriage.
Larry was a longtime active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge #403 and the Moose Lodge #606.
He enjoyed golfing and bowling and loved spending time with his family and friends especially his grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife, Carol; two daughters, Pamela Smith and Linda (George) Graskey, both of Superior, WI; one son, Robert “Bob” Smith, Lake Nebagamon, WI; five grandchildren, Sean and Blake Graskey, Amy Pionk, Jaclyn West and Chelsea Smith-Thompson; two great-grandchildren, Kieten and Jacob Pionk; one sister, Pat (John) Jones, Superior, WI and one brother, Robert (Judy) Smith, FL and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his son Larry Lee Smith in 1993, his parents and sisters Joanne Strong, Donna Shuman and Peg Dudsic.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Superior.
Larry’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to St. Luke’s Hospice for the wonderful care they provided Larry throughout his illness.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Larry’s name to the St. Francis Xavier Church Elevator Fund.
