Leo Hughes

November 19, 1935 — October 6, 2019

Leo Hughes, 83, longtime resident of Lake Nebagamon, died Sunday, October 6, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN. He was born in Duluth, MN, November 19, 1935, the son of Leo and Lila (Frenette) Hughes.

Leo served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps.

He was united in marriage to Michele Barnaby September 1, 1984 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lake Nebagamon, and they recently celebrated thirty-five years of marriage before his passing.

He sailed on the Great Lakes as a chef and boat steward for U.S. Steel for forty years, and retired from the Edwin H. Gott in July, 1995.

Leo was a longtime active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lake Nebagamon, WI, where he was a cantor. He was a member of the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association and served on the Knights of Columbus council. He was also a member of the American Legion in Poplar, and volunteered with K.I.N., an organization serving kids and families in the Maple school district.

Leo loved animals and rescued several domestic animals, and enjoyed feeding birds, raccoons and deer. He also had a passion for cooking and shared his passion at many events over the years.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Michele; Lake Nebagamon, WI; sons, Travis (Angela) Hanson, Superior, WI and Ryan (Michelle) Hanson, Suffield, CT; grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia and Josie Hanson, Shyloh Taylor, and Max and Samuel Hanson; niece, Debbie (Scott) Mauer; and Jennifer Taylor, and Michael and Christi Barnaby.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Helen Hursh.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 AM, Friday, October 11, 2019 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 11648 E. County Road B., Lake Nebagamon, where a rosary will begin at 10:30 AM. Mass will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Fr. Inna as celebrant.

Following Mass, Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Burial will be in Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

The family would like mention that Scottish attire is welcomed.
