Leona Ellis, 92, former longtime resident of Superior, WI, died on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Arbor Lakes Senior Living in Minneapolis, MN. She was born on September 25, 1927 in Hazel Green, WI, the daughter of John and Teresa (Schuster) Shykes.
Leona graduated from South Shore High School. She married Roy Ellis in 1951 at the age of twenty-four and they celebrated fourteen years of marriage before his passing in 1964.
Leona was a bookkeeper for the Superior Board of Education for over twenty-four years. She was previously employed with the County Treasurer’s Office in Washburn, WI, and at one time worked as a teller at the Security State Bank in Iron River, WI.
She was actively involved in the AFSCME Local Union 1937, which is affiliated with the School District Employees, where she held various offices including president of the local and participated in many negotiating committees.
Leona was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Superior and its choir. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and music. She loved spending time with her family and friends especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, Timothy (Becky) Ellis, Daniel (Diane) Ellis, and David (Jane) Ellis, all of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Adam, Robyn, Jason, Jonathan, Andrew, Thomas and Sarah; great grandchildren, Tyrece, Jada, Lydia, Nolan, Parker, Everett and Rilynn, sisters-in-law, Beth Shykes (John) and Dolores Shykes (James), both of Superior, WI, and Astrid Shykes (Matthew), Duluth, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Roy, Leona is preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, John, James, and Matthew Shykes.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, 1111 Belknap Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Inna Pothireddy as celebrant.
