In the calm early hours of the summer’s morning, Leona A. Johnson was lifted with God’s warm loving arms to heaven. She peacefully passed away on August 14, 2011 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
She was born on September 2, 1920 in Two Harbors, MN the daughter of Frank and Mary (Mrozek) Kulus.
Leona worked as a waitress at various restaurants including Bob’s Chop Suey House, Louis Café and Jade Fountain for many years.
She was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, planting flowers, crocheting and traveling to Las Vegas, NV. She also liked playing cards especially at the Belgium Club. Her passion was her family.
Leona is survived by a daughter, Diane (Greg) Peterson, Superior, WI; two sons, William (Mariann) Johnson, Oconomowoc, WI and Brian (Debbi) Johnson, Franklin, TN; five grandchildren, Greg and Brandon Peterson, Brett, Amanda and Heather Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Teanna, Chelsea and Keyera Peterson; sister, Marion Beetcher, Trego, WI; brothers George Kulus, Superior, WI and Chester (Faye) Kulus, Franklin, NH and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband William E. Johnson on August 15, 1992, sisters Louise Cowan and Margaret Reinkall and brothers Roland and Raymond Kulus.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Holy Assumption Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
Pallbearers for the service will be her three grandsons, Greg and Brandon W. Peterson and Brett Johnson, and James Sweeney, Robert Manor and Edward Shaul.
The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
