Lillian A. Sweeney, 84, lifelong Superior resident, died Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on August 12, 1933 in Superior to Ignashus “Bill” and Katherine (Dvorscak) Plachta.
She had been employed as a teacher and a librarian for the Superior School District for many years and previously had taught in Long Prairie, MN. Lillian was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Garden Club in Gordon, WI. She loved gardening both flowers and vegetables. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lillian is survived by one daughter, Lynn (Steve) Johnson, Amnicon Township, WI; two sons, Chad Sweeney, Twin Cities and Michael (Michelle) Sweeney, Hermantown, MN; five grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson, Superior, WI, Stephanie (Ward) Smith, Cherry, MN, Katherine Johnson, River Falls, WI, Mikayla and Megan Sweeney, both of Hermantown, MN; two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Everett Johnson, both of Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helen Burlaga, Katherine Nelson, and Virginia Bernacki, and brother Ray Plachta.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service with Rev. Fr. Leon Flaherty on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5 th Street, Superior. Visitation will resume on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church at 10:00 AM and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior.
