Lorraine Edith (Nurmi) Mikkola, 88, Superior and formerly of Brule, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. Lorraine was born on March 21, 1930 in Superior, WI to Werner and Anna (Saari) Nurmi. After her mother’s death in 1933, she lived with relatives Eino and Marie Aho in Maple.
She married Alexander Mikkola on December 31, 1949. They spent many happy years in Brule, where Lorraine lived a quiet country life, spending time on needlepoint projects, puzzle books, gardening, caring for her beloved cat, Ditty, and visiting with friends during happy hour at the Lions Club, the Kro Bar or Jack & Edna’s. Everyone loved Lorraine’s laugh and silly sense of humor. She enjoyed entertaining her granddaughters for weekend sleepovers, often along with their cousins and friends. Lorraine and Alex relocated to Oliver in 1997, before settling in Superior.
Lorraine is survived by granddaughters, Melissa (Ryan) Toonen, Fairlawn, OH and Lindsay (Jon) Koschoreck, Baltimore, MD; two great-grandsons, Leo and Axel Toonen, and soon-to-be-born great-granddaughter Minerva Koschoreck, as well as former daughter-in-law and caregiver Darlene Cronin, whom Lorraine called her best friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents Werner and Anna, husband Alex and sons Dale and Dennis Mikkola.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center and continue until the 2:00 PM memorial service with John Maynard officiating. Burial will be Everrest Cemetery in Waino, WI.
