Louise E. Hoven, 84, lifelong Superior resident, died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on June 23, 1930 in Superior, WI to Delbert G. Countryman and Hazel O. (Larson) Dykins.
Louise graduated from the former Central High School in 1948.
Louise was employed as a secretary for forty years. She worked for the YMCA. She was a secretary for the Superintendant of Douglas County Schools and the Superior Board of Education. She retired as an administrative secretary from the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation in 1992 after twenty-two years of service.
She married Merrill Hoven on July 18, 1953 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church and they celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage before his passing in October 2010.
She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, active in the CLCW, Lydia Circle and was a Sunday school teacher. She was past secretary for the Douglas County Cancer Society. Her other memberships include Sons of Norway, Superior Curling Club, Aad Temple Shrine Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society. Upon her retirement, Louise enjoyed volunteering her time at the Fairlawn Museum, Southdale Nursing Home and Concordia Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bird watching and traveling.
Louise will be remembered as a very compassionate person who enjoyed reaching out to others especially those less fortunate. Louise enjoyed nine wonderful years of wintering with her husband Merrill in the Gulf of the Mississippi.
Louise is survived by one daughter Jane (Michael) Meehan; one son Gary (Susan) Hoven; five grandchildren, Ethan (Caitlyn Fields) Meehan, Fargo, ND and Alex Meehan of Superior, Martin (Devanie) Hoven, Robert (Noelle) Hoven, Chelsie (John) Kolnik all of the Twin Cities area; five great-grandchildren, Deacon Hoven, William Hoven, Rachel Kolnick, Margo Hoven and Madeline Hoven and a special son, Eric (Lori) Sewell and expecting the sixth great-grandchild in May.
She is preceded in death by her husband Merrill, sister Marian (Countryman) Anderson, mother Hazel Dykins, stepfather John Dykins and father Delbert Countryman.
Visitation will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 10, 2015 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior and continue until the 12:30 PM funeral service with Pastor Greg Gullicksrud officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Superior.
Pallbearers for the service will be Louise’s grandchildren, and Eric Sewell and family friends George Houssell and Tim Gangnon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Louise’s name to Concordia Lutheran Church Bus Fund, Riverside Cemetery or HSDC – Humane Society of Douglas County, Superior Shelter, P.O. Box 891, Superior, WI 54880.
