Lugarda Nelson

Lugarda Nelson, 86, died Sunday, January 30, 2011, at her home in
Superior surrounded by her family.

She was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota on September 12, 1924, the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Glatt) Steffan.

During WWII she worked in an airplane factory as a Riveter in Wichita, Kansas. After that she was on the Eagles Auxiliary Marching Drill Team.

For many years Lugarda and her husband, Orpheus were owners and proprietors of “Nelsons Bar” in Superior until her retirement twenty-three years ago. She attended WITC in the Accounting Department prior to owning the Bar. Lugarda was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Elks.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Sally) Nelson, Superior and Gary (Debby Smith) Nelson, Solon Springs, WI; one daughter, Linda Nelson, Grand Rapids, Michigan; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Peter, Nick and Tom Steffan; three sisters, Rose Lindorff, Ann Jones and Josephine Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orpheus on June 17, 1993; two brothers, Michael and Paul Steffan; and two sisters, Mary and Caroline.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Lugarda's name to St. Vincent de Paul or to the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 3, 2011 in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home; 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior. Visitation will resume at 10:00 AM, Friday, February 4, 2011 and continue until the 11:00 AM, memorial service in the funeral home with Rev. Father Andrew Ricci officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in the spring.
