WALKER, Mamie Miriam

Mrs. Mamie Miriam WALKER (nee POKKI) 91, passed away peacefully at Middle River Health And Rehabilitation Center, South Range WI, on Wednesday September 1, 2010 where she was a resident since March 2006. She was born in Fort William (now Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada). In 1952, she married Oliver Walker and movied to 1121 Weeks Ave, in Superior WI where she lived for over 50 years. Mamie was an excellent seamstress who worked at many local shops, well into her 70’s, and who made most of her own clothes. She often visited family in Canada and loved venturing anywhere, at home in the States, Canada or abroad. She loved life, family and was especially fond of “Moses” her cat. Mae loved the arts, especially music and ceramic crafts.

She is survived by: two sisters Laila Kantola and Bertha Wicklund, both of Thunder Bay; four nieces, Elsie (Bud) Doley, Glenna (Earl) Hunt, Alison (Greg) Allam, Alexis (Kevin) Leveque; eight nephews Arne (Louise) Talvitie, Ken (Brenda), Leonard, Roy, Andrew (Tracey), and John (Suzanne) Kantola, Earl and Kevin (Susan) Wicklund; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, all in Canada, and many cousins in the United States. Mamie was wonderfully caring of her many nieces and nephews by whom she is fondly remembered.

Mamie was predeceased by her husband Oliver Walker (1974), her parents Serafina and Anton Pokki (1964/1967), a brother Uuno Pokki (1974) and four sisters - Irene Talvitie (2000), Tekla (1920), Vilna Vienno (1927), and Terttu Garland (2003). Also predeceasing her, was her dear cousin and close friend, Ella Hill (2007).

Visitation will begin at 12 noon until the 1:00 PM Funeral Service on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2022 East 2nd Street, Superior 54880, with Pastor Patrick Ziems, officiating. Burial will be in the Nemadji Cemetery.

The Mamie’s family would like to thank the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center staff for being so devoted and loving to Mamie.
