Marie Alice Weston-Milchesky-Hayes rose to meet Jesus on December 4, 2018. She was born on May 24, 1918 to Joseph and Martha (Urban) Weston at St. Francis Hospital in East End Superior, WI. Marie lived in the East End area most of her growing-up years. She had three sisters and one brother: Helen, Lucille, Margaret, and Edward. Marie was the youngest. She graduated from St. Albert's School but had to quit further schooling to help her mother at home.
In her teen years, she met James Willis Milchesky, whom she married on May 25, 1937 when she was 19. They lived in Baraboo, WI for a few years. Jim, an engineer, worked at the Badger Munition Plant project to survey and lay out construction of the plant, which was up and running in 1943. Baraboo was where their two twins, Karen and Jimmy, were born on February 21, 1943. Shortly after, they all moved back to Superior. Jim started working for the Wisconsin State Highway Department, and Marie was a stay-at-home mother taking care of the twins when the stork came calling once more. Son Thomas was born on August 28, 1946. When the children started school, Marie began working and modeling at Harrison’s Fashion City. She also worked at the hat shop next door. In earlier years, she worked at Newberry’s Dime Store and Stokely’s Cannery Factories in both Superior and Florida.
Marie married Bill Hayes on January 18, 1984. They lived in Boca Raton, FL for several years before moving to Solon Springs, WI and, finally, back to Superior to be close to her family. She loved living at the St. Francis Apartments and was very grateful to Troy Johnson, her landlord, for his kindness and thoughtfulness toward her, especially during her last years.
Her hobbies were bingo and Royal Rummy. She loved cooking and baking. She was a long-time member of the Lady Eagles Auxiliary, where she was the oldest active member. She was also a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and Alter Society. She often remarked how much she praised Father Jim Tobolski for being so wonderful. Marie loved going out for breakfast, pizza, a tender steak, and, occasionally, a lobster, especially at Dreamland, where she enjoyed a kiss from Dan, the owner.
Earlier this year, Marie celebrated at three parties for her 100 th birthday. She gleamed with her beautiful smile at each one, but her most beautiful smile came when she held her newborn great-granddaughter, Evalina Mae, the day after Thanksgiving. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. All of her family will miss her.
Marie outlived her parents, sisters and brother, her two husbands, son (Jimmy), and son-in-law (Dennis Nolan). Her daughter, Karen, is currently in a rest home in Superior, and her son, Tom, who lived close to his mom, misses her.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Karen Nolan, and son, Thomas (Shirley) Milchesky, both of Superior, WI; five grandchildren, Sean Nolan, of Superior, WI, Eric Nolan, of Duluth, MN, Shari (Andrew) Freeman, of Corning, CA, Mike (Tami) Milchesky, of Superior, WI, and Kristen (Vujoš), of New York, NY; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
