Mary Ellen Flaherty

Mary Ellen Flaherty, 82, lifelong Superior resident, died Monday, July 9, 2018 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior surrounded by her children. She was born on January 16, 1936 in Superior, WI to Clarence and Mary (Mahoney) Gorman.

She was a 1954 graduate of the former Cathedral High School and went on to receive her LPN degree from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical Institute. She married John Flaherty on September 7, 1957 at the former St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Superior and celebrated fifty-five years of marriage before his passing in July of 2013. Mary Ellen was employed as an LPN at the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends at New Perspective and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mary Ellen is survived by one daughter, Colleen Flaherty Basinski, Superior, WI; two sons, Dan (Bridget) Flaherty, Velva, ND and Todd (Sue Tokkesdal) Flaherty, Superior, WI; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, sister Barbara Moe and brother Patrick Gorman.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 16, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Superior, WI. Honorary pallbearers will be Mary Ellen’s grandchildren, Eric Basinski, Ian Flaherty, Mary Flaherty, Rebecca (Jon) Coyle and Eathon Basinski.

Mary Ellen’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at New Perspective and Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Centers, Dr. Sonja Swenson and to nurse Stephanie with St. Luke’s Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Mary Ellen.
