Mary Kay (McGill) Leighty, 84, Duluth resident, died Monday, March 28, 2016 at the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth. She was born on July 19, 1931 in Superior, WI to Dr. James W. and Mary (Leader) McGill.
Following graduation from St. Mary of the Woods College in Terra Haute, IN, Mary Kay taught elementary grade school in the Robbinsdale, MN school district for several years prior to moving back to Superior in the 1960’s where she earned her Master’s Degree in public education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Following significant loss of her vision she worked at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Duluth as a disability counselor for several years.
Mary Kay is survived by two brothers, James (Jackie) McGill, Atlanta, GA and John (Marilyn) McGill, Baytown, TX; six nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Leighty in 2013, parents Dr. James and Mary McGill, paternal grandparents Dr. Patrick and Gertrude McGill and maternal grandparents James and Estelle Leader.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
