Mary Anne Stefanko

Mary Anne Stefanko, 98, longtime Superior area resident, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at Golden Living Center, Superior.

She was born in Superior, Wisconsin on June 18, 1912, the daughter of John and Rose (Furiak) Stefanko.

Mary attended Bryant School and Central High School in Superior.

After her mother’s death in 1929, Mary gave up her dream of becoming a nun to become the caregiver for her siblings and later “grandmother” to her nieces and nephews.

She worked for many years as a housekeeper at Superior Memorial Hospital.

The job she loved most, though, was that of sacristan at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, a job she had for over 70 years.

Mary was a great cook and enjoyed gardening, shopping and singing in the church choir. She is now singing in heaven!

Mary was a lifelong member of Holy Assumption and St. Ann’s Circle.

She is survived by her brothers, Joseph of West Allis, WI and James (Georgiann) of Superior; sisters Margaret Smith, Angeline Timmerman and Dorothy (Russell) Heytens of Superior; many nieces and nephews and her beloved bird, Woody.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose Stefanko; a brother John Jr; two sisters, Pauline (Tyson) and Ann; three brothers-in-law, Gilbert Tyson, Leo Timmerman and Henry (Bill) Smith, and sister-in-law, Eleanor Stefanko.

Visitation will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 4, 2010 and continue until the 11:00 AM, Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Assumption Catholic Church with Rev. Father Ron Olson as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, Wisconsin Pallbearers for the service will be Dennis Smith, Aaron Timmerman, Ron Heytens, Ryan Flaherty, John Stefanko and John Timmerman.

Memorials preferred to Holy Assumption Catholic Church, Superior.
