Mary Sue Sylvia Lange, 73, lifelong Superior resident, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice Unit in Duluth.
She was born on March 31, 1941 in Superior, WI to William C. and Sylvia H. Lange.
Mary Sue graduated from the former Central High School in 1959 and from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1964.
She was an elementary school teacher and taught in Wausau, WI for a couple years until she came back to Superior where she taught at Nemadji and Cooper schools until she retired in 2000 after thirty-five years of service.
She was a former member of Central United Methodist Church. She was the treasurer and president of AAUW (American Association of University Women), treasurer, vice president and board of director for UWS Alumni Association, charter member of the UWS Alumni Association, and a member of the Foundation Club – UWS Foundation, Superior Federation of Teachers and their Executive Board. She was the Area Representative for Youth for Understanding and Field Advocate for International Cultural Exchange. She was listed in 71 as Outstanding Women of America and the 72 Edition of Personalities of the West and Midwest. She also was a member of the Lake Superior Reading Council, Tony Yaworski Scholarship Board, and the treasurer for the Central High School Class of 59 Education Foundation and was a community volunteer.
Mary Sue is survived by her chosen family, Pat, Pam, Kaitlin & Sarah Murphy and Sean, Colette, Madeline & Autumn Murphy.
She is preceded in death by Patrick M. “Murph” Murphy, her lifelong companion and fiancé, her parents William and Sylvia Lange, infant brother Robert, sister Betty Kossak and her beloved pets China and Val.
A private family burial took place on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in November.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made: UWS Foundation in support of the William C. and Sylvia H. Lange Scholarship, Central HS Class of ‘59 Scholarship, or the Douglas County Humane Society.
