Matt E. Erickson, 90, longtime Superior resident, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. He was born on August 8, 1924 on the farm in Highbridge, WI to Matt and Frieda (Mikkonen) Erickson.

He graduated from the Ashland High School in Ashland, WI.

Matt was a World War II veteran who served his country in the United States Army in the European Theatre.

He was employed as a pipefitter for the U.S. Steel Corporation for thirty years.

Matt married Leona Koshir in 1954 and they celebrated fifty-three years of marriage before her passing in March of 2008.

He was a clock maker, a unique craftsman who enjoyed making “gauge clocks”.

Matt is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Gella, Superior, WI and Jane (Larry) Holm, Portland, OR; one brother, Roy J. (Eleanor) Erickson, Superior, WI; sister-in-law, Helene Erickson, Corona, CA; brother-in-law, Rudy (Zoe) Koshir, Bloomington, MN; God Child and very dear friend, Sue (Terry) Paine, Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife Leona, brother William and his parents.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and their Hospice Unit and to the thoughtful staff at the Lighthouse in Superior for the wonderful care that Matt was given.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 PM, Saturday, November 15, 2014 in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior and continue until the 3:00 PM memorial service with Pastor Darrell Kyle of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon officiating.

Burial will be in Mellen Union Cemetery, Mellen, WI at a later date.

Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
