Matthew P. Shykes

Matthew P. Shykes, 86, resident of Duluth’s Woodland area for over fifty years, formerly of Iron River, WI, died April 29, 2018 in Duluth, MN. He was born February 14, 1932 in Witchert, IL, the son of John F. and Teresa R. (Schuster) Shykes.

Matthew married the love of his life, Astrid Biolo, January 26,1957, and they recently celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before his passing.

He owned service stations in Duluth for many years, later working as a salesman for Como Oil and Anderson Fuel for ten years before his retirement. After his retirement he worked as a salesman for Sears.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Duluth.

Matt was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing cribbage at the Woodland Community Club. In high school, Matt lettered in baseball and, later managed an adult baseball team in Iron River.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Astrid, Duluth, MN; children, Ricky (Carmen) Shykes, Aranjuez, Spain, Theresa (Thomas) Coombe, Superior, WI, Matthew Scott (Shuangyan) Shykes, Hermantown, MN, and Susan (David) Stocke, Hermantown, MN; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; sister, Leona Ellis, Superior, WI; and sisters-in-law, Beth and Delores Shykes, both of Superior, WI.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James and John Shykes.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior, with a scripture service to begin at 7:00 PM, led by Deacon Walter Beier.

Visitation will resume at 12:00 PM, Thursday, May 3, 2018 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 4230 St. John’s Avenue, Duluth, and will continue until the Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM with Rev. Fr. Richard Kunst as celebrant. Burial will take place at 4:00 PM in St. Michael Cemetery in Iron River.
