Maureen M. Koenen

Maureen M. Koenen was born on May 20th, 1934, in Superior Wisconsin to Frank and Josetta Heinen, and was a lifelong resident of Superior’s East End. After filling 90 years with family and friends, she passed away peacefully at Villa Marina Nursing Home on October 13th, 2024, with family by her side.

Maureen was united in marriage to Harold E. Koenen on August 9th, 1952. Together they raised a beautiful family and recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.

She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and often served as a Eucharistic Minister. Maureen had a passion for quilting and was a founding member of the Pieceful Quilters. The Pieceful Quilters started as a small group of ladies that quilted and attended Quilt Shows together but evolved into a group of hundreds of senior citizens that traveled the world together as the St. Francis Travelers. Maureen planned, coordinated, and guided most of the trips that the St. Francis Travelers took. In addition to traveling, she went to water aerobics, worked for the Census Bureau, and participated on the Election Board for her district.

Maureen was an upbeat, enthusiastic, and loving woman with a big personality. In her life, she never met a stranger because she would strike up a conversation with everyone. She was well known for telling great, embellished stories, and even if you had heard a story before, you would listen again because she never told a story the same way twice. When she wasn’t traveling, she loved to make quilts, cross stitches, and crocheted dishcloths that she gifted to her family and friends. She enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels from the deck that her sons built for her and baking with produce that was brought in by Harold from the garden. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and also enjoyed listening to Irish music. Above all, Maureen loved her family to pieces and looked forward to spending time with them, especially on the holidays. She will be forever missed by all who knew her.

Maureen is survived by her beloved husband, Harold; children Stephen (Tammyra) Koenen, Jeffrey (Jill Rolanson) Koenen, David (Shari Pioro) Koenen, Nancy (Robert) Roske, Patricia (Kevin) Miller, and Robert Koenen; grandchildren Christopher, Jessica, Heather, Jeffrey Jr (Ashley), Rachel, Samuel (Jessica), Rindi, April, Amy (Shawn), McKenzie (William), Amanda (Matthew), Emily, Evan, Briana, Holly, and Kristie; great-grandchildren Payton, Ethan, Mason, Thatcher, Alma, Ilee, Tamia, Kasey, Karleigh, Jorden, Jayden, Ava, Katelyn, Lauren, Macy, Oliver, Adrianna, Emilio, Wynter, Annaleya, and Cynthia; and sister Patricia Uchytil.

She is preceded in death by her son, Daniel; siblings Frank Heinen, James Heinen, and Mary Jo Nuxoll; grandchildren Michael and Kenneth; and her parents.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 28th, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 E. 4th Street in Superior, and will continue until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Lunch will be served in the Parish Hall following the service.

A Celebration of Life Gathering with Irish Music will also be held on Monday, October 28th, 2024, from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Dodgies East End Tavern, 2114 E. 5th Street in Superior.
