Michael J. Carey

Michael J. Carey, 84, Superior, died Thursday, April 11, 2013 in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on September 19, 1928 in Withee, WI to Leo and Bertha (Kaufman) Carey.

He graduated from Park Falls High School in 1946 and then joined the Navy where he served aboard an aircraft carrier with Admiral Richard Byrd on his Antarctic Expedition “Operation Highjump” in 1947.


Following his discharge from the Navy, Mike moved to Superior where he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1952.

He married Barbara Fitzgerald on February 14, 1953 and recently celebrated sixty years of marriage.

Mike loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and hiking with his very best friend, his wife Barb. He was a great Packer fan and enjoyed humorous sessions with his Viking friends.

His working years were spent in Superior in the retail trade and construction, retiring in 1989.

He was active in the United Way, East End Bowling League, and the “Over the Hill Gang” of golfers. He was a past board member of the Superior YMCA, Superior Catholic School System, St. Francis Travelers along with being its membership chairman.

Mike was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the church parish council, the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion. He was also a volunteer at St. Francis Home in the Park, Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Superior, and as a tax consultant for the elderly and low income for many years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Barb; four daughters, Pamela (Brad) Lisdahl, Corvallis, OR, Linda (Tim) Young, Brainerd, MN, Mary (Randy) Olson, Des Moines, IA, Michelle (Bruce) Tunell, Superior; one son, Steve (Barb) Carey, Superior; twelve grandchildren, Michelle (Mike) Storrs, Mike Lisdahl, Tina (Troy) Johnson, Amy (Levi) Kehn, Ryan Young, Matthew (Ashley) Olson, Eric (Joelle) Olson, Justin (Marisa) Tunell, Erin, Rebecca and Benjamin Tunell, Leanna Carey; seven great-grandchildren, Sam Storrs, Annika and Addy Kehn, Hunter, Mason and Brooke, Johnson and Abrahm Olson; one sister, Jean (Bernie) Herber, La Jolla, CA; one brother, Patrick (Shirley) Carey, Whitehouse, TN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Louise.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 E. 4th St., Superior, with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski, as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.

Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
