Michael “Poncho” Alan Velin, 81, of Superior, passed away peacefully, Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation with family by his side. He was born on April 11, 1942, to Marcus and Elsie (Ukkola) Velin. He attended Nelson Dewey and Franklin Schools and graduated from East High School in 1960 where he participated in football and golf. After graduation he married Linda Johnson, and they raised four children in their East End Home.
Mike was a self-employed carpenter and home builder and enjoyed passing on his knowledge of carpentry to his son. Over the years Mike had been employed by Jerry Jacques, Fred Piper, and also worked with his brother Tom. Mike was a carpenter for the School District of Superior for several years and a past president of the local carpenters union.
Mike loved life and over the years enjoyed deer camp, fishing, trap shooting, bowling, pool, golf, westerns, poker, and cribbage. He enjoyed watching sports on TV and kept an eye on the weekly football game spreads. During retirement he was very social and enjoyed keeping up on the gossip at the local taverns…and beer.
Mike is survived by his children, Vicki Velin, DeSoto, WI, Michele (Todd) Porter, of Missouri, and Darren Velin, Superior, WI; sister, Karen Malia, Brooklyn Center, MN; his brothers, Thomas (Louise) Velin and Paul (Deborah) Velin, of Superior, WI; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson; former wife, Linda Brow, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie Sue, nephews, Gunnar and Garth Velin, and his parents.
The family would like to thank the staff at Villa Marina and St. Luke’s Hospice for the compassionate care Mike received.
A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior, with a Time of Remembrance to begin at 12:00 PM with Gary Banker officiating.
