Muriel Viggiano

August 29, 1922 — August 7, 2014

Muriel Viggiano, age 91, longtime Superior resident, entered eternal life on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at her home. She was born on August 29, 1922 in Duluth, MN to Albert and Electa (Ross) Lee.

Muriel graduated from Central High School (Class of ’39) and received her BS and Master’s Degrees from UW-Superior in 1963 and 1969. She proudly served in the United States Army (WAC) during World War II as an airplane mechanic, motor pool driver, clerk, and chow hall supervisor. She enlisted in 1943 and received an Honorable discharge in 1947.

Muriel impacted many of the youth of Superior in her twenty-two years of teaching at Cooper and Blaine Elementary Schools, retiring in 1985.

She was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church, CLCW, Altar Guild and Lydia Circle. She enjoyed participating in Sons of Norway, Retired Teachers Association (SAREA, WREA), Blaine School Teachers Group, ADK Sorority, NARFE and her quilting groups. She loved spending time with family, friends, her Church and piecing quilts.

Muriel is reunited with her parents, husband James Viggiano, sisters Ellen Laurvick and Eleanor Fonger, brother Wallace Lee, and great grandson Pierre.

She is survived by her brother Robert (Betty) Lee; children Jay (wife Susan, children Denise, Jamie and Vince); Glenn (wife Susan, children Eric and Anna); Rita (husband Don Matheson, children Jenni, Ken and Michael); Kim (husband Pete Susens, children Kristin and David); and Louis (wife Linda, children Tara, and George). She is further survived by eleven great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, friends and “family” too numerous to list, but certainly not forgotten.

Muriel’s active community participation, infectious smile and love of life will be sadly missed by all.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior.

Visitation will resume at 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 Ogden Avenue, Superior and continue until the 11:00 AM funeral service with Lay Pastor Gary Banker officiating.

Pallbearers will be Muriel’s grandchildren.

Burial will be in Nemadji Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.
