Nancy Anna Nelson

July 17, 1935 — January 19, 2026

Duluth

Nancy Ann Nelson peacefully left this world on January 19, 2026, surrounded by family, a lifetime of love, memories, and the quiet strength that defined her. She was born on July 17, 1935, in Superior, WI, to Ernest R. Swanson and Mildred (Nelson) Swanson. After the passing of her mother, Nancy was also lovingly raised by her stepmother, Alice E. Swanson.

Nancy spent most of her life in Superior, WI, where she built a home and a family with her beloved husband, Gerald “Jerry” K. Nelson. Together they raised three children: Deanna Lynn Nelson, Christy Jo Nelson, and Gerald Scott Nelson (Scott).

A devoted caregiver by nature and by profession, Nancy earned her LPN degree in nursing. She was especially passionate about advocating for and supporting children with special needs, dedicating many years to volunteering and working in that area. Her compassion, patience, and quiet determination touched countless lives.

Nancy’s life, like so many, was filled with moments of joy and sorrow, laughter and loss. In the later years of her life, she found renewed happiness at Edgewood Assisted Living in Hermantown. There, she made many dear friends and embraced community life—enjoying bingo, arts and crafts, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and sharing everyday moments that brought her genuine joy.

Nancy will be remembered as a spirited woman with a sharp wit and a deeply loving heart. One of her many talents — and one her family will never forget — was her home cooking, which brought everyone together around the table and made every meal feel like love.

Nancy is survived by her son, Scott, son-in-law, Erik Nelson (Christine); grandchildren: Andy, Nick (Abby), Cooper (Christy), and Morgan (Dylan); great-grandson, Clayton; sister, Margaret E. Lane (Tom),  sister-in-law, Carolyn Swanson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends who will carry her memory forward.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; daughters, Deanna (DeeDee) and Christy; grandson, Christopher; brother, George Swanson; sister-in-law, Jean Swanson; her twin sister, Nylene Brattz; brother-in-law, Richard Braatz; mother, Mildred; father, Ernie; and her stepmother, Alice.

A special Thank You to Edgewood Vista Care Center and Caring Edge in Hermantown for all the loving care she received while residing. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
