Peter J. (Pete) Moran, of Superior, WI, went home to be with his loving Savior on Friday, January 1, 2021 at the Solvay Hospice House. He was born on December 20, 1940 in Boscobel, WI to John and Gladys (Kligora) Moran. Pete was raised in Madison, WI, where he graduated from East High School. While at East, he was active in student government and athletics and was a member of the concert band.
He graduated from UW-Madison with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While at UW, he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corp and the Scabbard and Blade Society. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. He later earned a Master of Business Education degree from UW-Madison and did advance graduate work at UW-Superior and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
He was a Vietnam veteran and a career member of the US Army Reserve, retiring with thirty years of service as a Colonel. His highest decorations included the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a Life Member of the Reserve Officers Association, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was employed for thirty-two years as a Marketing and Management Instructor by the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College-Superior, retiring in 2002.
Pete was joined in holy matrimony to Mavis Nygaard on September 1, 1972 in Beloit, WI and celebrated forty-eight years of marriage. They were blessed with a son, John and a daughter, Amanda. Their union was one of great love and devotion to each other and their family.
He was very active in his community, serving on the boards of many local non-profit organizations. He also served terms on Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church parish council and the Cathedral School board. He was elected five times to the Superior City Council.
He was a passionate advocate for veterans and was appointed to serve two six-year terms on the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs by Governor Jim Doyle. When his terms at the state level were up, he re-focused his efforts locally as a charter member of the Honor Flight Northland Board of Directors.
Pete was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Gladys; his sister, Patricia; his stepfather, Joseph Moran, and his stepbrothers, Byron, Michael and Eugene Moran.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis and children, John Moran of Madison, WI and Amanda Moran of Tulsa, OK; grandson, Jude Craig of Tulsa, OK; brother, Michael (Anna) of Indianapolis, IN; three nieces, Marianna (Daniel) Gerritzen of Indianapolis, IN, Sarah (Jordan) Fineberg of Minneapolis, MN and Laura (Elizabeth) Moran of Los Angeles, CA; grandniece, Grace Gerritzen; grandnephews, Michael and Jack Gerritzen and Alexander, Erik and Theo Fineberg. He is also survived by stepbrother, Martin Moran and stepsisters, Jo Anne Moran and Rosemary Koerber and their families. Also left behind is special family friend, Orrin (Linda) Carr.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard at church.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Pete’s name to Cathedral School, Superior, WI, the Superior-Douglas County Family YMCA Foundation, the Voyageurs Area Boy Scout Council Foundation, or the Solvay Hospice House.
