Peter M. Steffan

Peter M. Steffan, 86, longtime Superior resident, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Essentia Health Miller Dwan in Duluth.

He was born on February 16, 1926 in Devil’s Lake, ND to Michael and Catherine (Glatt) Steffan. He spent his childhood years in North Dakota before moving to Superior, WI.


He attended Cathedral High School and became an apprentice machinist for the Great Northern Railroad. He later served in the United States Army 70th Infantry Division as a mortar crewman in the European Theater of Operations during WWII.

After returning to the States, he settled in Superior, WI where he met Florence Michalski, whom he married January 20, 1951, enjoying fifty-nine years of marriage until her death in 2010.

Throughout the years he was employed as a machinist with the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement.

Peter attended church at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a life member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans Association.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan (Richard) Hoglund, Punta Gorda, FL; two sons, Mark Steffan and Timothy (Sandra) Steffan, both of Superior; seven grandchildren, Kari Retzer, Cannon Falls, MN, Nicholas Steffan, Tempe, AZ, Peter and Alainy Steffan, both of Superior, WI, Rich Hoglund, Chanhassen, MN, Brad Hoglund, St. Paul, MN and Laura Hoglund, Duluth, MN; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Miranda Retzer; three sisters, Rose Lindorff, Lake Havasu, AZ, Anna Jones, Superior, WI and Josephine Johnston, Lakewood, CO; one brother, Nicholas (Mary Lou) Steffan, St. Paul, MN and several nieces and nephews.

Peter is preceded in death by his wife Florence, parents, sisters Marie, Caroline and Lugarda and brothers Paul, Michael and Thomas.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 14, 2012 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
