Philip L. "Phil" Martineau

Philip L. Martineau, 87, Superior, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on January 16, 1925 in Grand Rapids, MN to Edward and Mary G. (Metzger) Martineau and had been a Superior resident since 1961.

He served in the United States Marine Corp from July 1943 to January 1946 and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Midway Island, Jack’s Farm-Oahu, Eniwetok Island, Saipan Island, Guam and returned to Pier 91 in Seattle, WA before his discharge.

Phil married Norene Marx on June 29, 1948 in Deer River, MN and celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.

He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Deer River Volunteer Fire Department. He was more recently a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Superior East End Civic Club, Superior Chamber of Commerce, Athletic Committee, Superior Optimist Club, the United Way; Nemadji Men’s Golf Club, the Romeo Club and the Diocese of Superior Pastorial Council.

Phil was employed as a pipe-liner for Lakehead Pipeline, also served as Director of Personnel; and retired from the Right of Way Department and retired form the Purchasing Department in April 1987 after thirty-five years of service. Phil was ordained as a deacon on April 26, 1986 and served as a Deacon at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Lighthouse of Superior and St. Francis Home in the Park where he was also the Supervisor for pastorial care.

In addition to his wife Norene, Phil is survived by one son, David M. Martineau, Madison, WI; one brother, William J. Martineau, Grand Rapids, MN; one step-sister, Elizabeth Shannon, Grand Rapids, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Martineau; one sister, Mary Vanasse; two step-brothers, Edward and William Shannon.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM until the 12:30 PM Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, January 31, 2012 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
