Phillip Ketola

Phillip R. "Phil" Ketola, 73, longtime Maple resident, died Friday, November 20, 2009 in the Solvay Hospice House, Duluth. He was born on August 25, 1936 in Maple to Harry and Martha (Anttila) Ketola.
He served in the United States Army, enlisting when he was seventeen years old.
Phil had sailed on the Great Lakes on many vessels for the Oglebay Norton Co. for forty years, retiring from the Columbia Star. He had sailed on the Edmund Fitzgerald for fourteen years. Following his retirement, Phil liked to winter in Lakeworth, FL, which he did for many years.
He was an honorary lifetime member of the Florida Sheriff's Association.
Phil was an excellent cook, he enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, collecting guns, enjoyed reading gun and car magazines, enjoyed feeding wildlife and he especially enjoyed his Corvettes.
He is survived by three brothers, William (Myra) Ketola, Sheboygan Falls, WI. Floyd (Mary Ann) Ketola, Mesa, AZ, Fred Ketola, Maple, WI; two sisters, Ruth (Darwin) McConkie, Maple, WI; Marie (Bill) DeBock, Kenosha, WI and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ted Ketola.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, November 23, 2009 and will continue at 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 24, 2009 until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.
Pastor Patrick Ziems of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.
Burial will be in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery, Maple.
Pallbearers for the service will be Matt, Mike, Mark and Randy Ketola, Stanley Jacobson and Axel Wiitala.
