Raymond J. Alswager

Centurion Raymond J. Alswager, 101, died peacefully on March 15, 2013. He was born in Courtenay, ND on June 12, 1911 to Frank and Amalia (Pechacek) Alswager.

While growing up, Raymond attended Courtenay Elementary School and Courtenay High School. Following high school, he graduated from Valley City Normal School in 1929 and spent nine years teaching in public schools in North Dakota. Raymond then furthered his education and changed his career direction by attending Northwestern Chiropractic College in Minneapolis, MN.

In 1941, Raymond married Ella Marjorie Bryan, whom he had met in North Dakota while teaching school. He began his chiropractic practice in Wisconsin by working for Dr. Herman Lange in Superior from 1943 through 1944. From 1945 to 1947, Raymond worked independently, dividing his practice between Glenwood City and New Richmond. In 1947 he returned with Marjorie and their two small children to Superior and took over the practice of Dr. Emil Mustonen. Raymond worked enthusiastically at his profession. He was affiliated with local and state chiropractors’ associations. Upon his retirement in 1994, the Northwest District of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association honored Raymond for his 50 years in the chiropractic profession.

When Raymond wasn’t busy seeing patients, he enjoyed doing yard work and spent many years doing vegetable gardening. He always enjoyed spending time with his family.

Throughout his years in Superior, Raymond was affiliated with Central Methodist/Faith United Methodist Church.

A regular weekly highlight for Raymond was watching Lawrence Welk programs on television. During Welk’s early years with his orchestra in North Dakota, Raymond and his brother Joseph had an opportunity to play one evening in Welk’s orchestra.

Also Raymond and Marjorie occasionally found time to be eager travelers across the nation.

Surviving Raymond are his daughter, Edythe (James) Lanswick; his granddaughter, Elizabeth (Michael) Mattson; his great-granddaughter, Brooke Mattson, all of Superior; a brother, Archie of Marshall, MN and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Preceded Raymond in death, in addition to his parents, were five brothers, Clarence, Lowell, William, Fred, and Joseph; one sister, Hazel Schoeler; his son Milton and his wife.

Private family graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery.
