Raymond J. Flaherty, 89, lifelong resident of Superior, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Twin Ports Health in Superior. He was born on January 22, 1936, to Michael and Genevieve (Selden) Flaherty.
He was a graduate of the former Cathedral High School and worked as a self-employed master plumber for many years before his retirement.
Ray also served in the United States Army. Ray was a life member of the Superior VFW Post #847 and later Post #10568. He was Commander of Post #847 several times and was also in the Military Order of the Cooties.
Ray was an advocate for the N.R.A. and a member for many years. Sports were another love of Ray’s. He was inducted into the Superior Academic and Athletic Hall of fame in 2010 as a member of the 1952 Cathedral Football team, a team which did not allow a score for that season. He was a freelance sportswriter for the Superior Telegram for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors especially when he could get out hunting. He was a unique man who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his sons Thomas (Tobi) Flaherty, Loxley, AL and Douglas (Anne) Flaherty, Superior; grandchildren Christine Ranta, Daniel Flaherty, and Katie (Daniel) Henning; great-grandchildren Abby, Eli, Lucas, Michael, Olivia; Sister Marjorie; brothers Mickey, Edward, William, and Dennis Flaherty; and several nieces and nephews.
A Service will be held at a later date with Military Honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
