Rev. Hans J. Vik, 90, resident of Superior, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at New Perspective Senior Living in Superior. He was born in Fairview, Montana on September 15, 1934, the son of Ingvar J. and Jenny L. (Larsen) Vik.
Having grown up in Sidney, MT, Hans graduated from Sidney High School in 1952.
Most importantly, Hans surrendered his heart and life to Jesus Christ at an Evangelistic Crusade in 1951 when he was 17 years old! This set the course for his life (and his family) as he served God faithfully for the next 73 years of his earthly life and now enjoys God’s goodness for all of eternity!
He then attended the former St. Paul bible college (now Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota) and earned his bachelor's degree in bible and theology in 1959. During this time, he continued to work as a machinist with his father at Sidney machine shop, worked briefly for the holly sugar corp., served in various roles at eastern montane bible camp, and began to fill pulpits at local churches. He accepted a call to pastor the Yellowstone Community (CMA) Church in Savage, Montana, in March of 1962 and served there for over 8 years.
He married Dorothy Roos on June 26, 1964, at Cloverland Covenant Church in Cloverland, WI. They spent sixty wonderful years together before his passing.
Hans became an ordained pastor on September 27, 1970. Shortly after, Hans was called to Wisconsin to serve as the pastor for Mission Covenant and Cloverland Covenant Churches from 1970 -1983, continuing to serve Mission Covenant in Poplar until 1987. He then ventured into Minnesota where he served in Cloquet, Cass Lake and Verndale before retiring on June 25, 2001, after 39 years of faithful service.
His family and faith were most important to him, but Hans was also a very handy machinist and could fix almost everything. He loved to fix things around the house and rebuild cars when he could (or had to!). He also enjoyed the outdoors and spent some time hunting and fishing as time allowed.
Hans is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Vik, Superior; son Carey (Jennifer) Vik, Poplar, WI; daughter Janelle Basley, Duluth, MN, sister Hilda McCracken, Bismark, ND; and grandchildren Josiah (Tori) Vik, Chicago, IL, Laryssa Vik, Omaha, NE, and Cora Gaskell, Duluth, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ingvar and Jenny Vik, stepmother Thelma Vik, and siblings Clara, Ingvar, Tordis, Linda and Ella.
A special thank you to the care team at New Perspectives and Essentia Hospice team who provided excellent care for Hans during the later difficult months he was here. Also thank you to all who visited, called, sent cards and loved on Hans and Dorothy during this difficult transition.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Mission Covenant Church in Poplar, Wisconsin, on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 PM with Reverend Darrell Nelson officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Carrol Johnson, Roger Green, Virgil Nelson, Milo Borg, Glen Levno, Greg Mirau, and Josiah Vik.
