June 23, 1933 — April 5, 2015

Richard L. “Dick” Jacobson, 81, lifetime Superior resident, entered eternal life on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital with family and friends by his side. For two and half years he fought a valiant fight against advanced stage lung cancer.

Richard was born on June 23, 1933 to Lloyd and Ethel (Mangseth) Jacobson.

He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1951, and one year later enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War as a radio/radar repairman. Richard served aboard the “Wasp” air craft carrier for four years traveling the world enjoying many faraway places and experiences. In 1965 he earned his Master of Education degree and held a certificate to teach mathematics and physics.

On June 16, 1962 he married Arlene Hanson at Concordia Lutheran Church and would have celebrated fifty-three years of marriage this June.

His teaching career began at Duluth East High School, moved to Superior Central High School and on to Superior Senior High when it was opened. He then moved on to Duluth Central High School and retired after an enjoyable thirty years of teaching. He enjoyed teaching and the students as well.

Dick was a long time, active member of Concordia Lutheran Church serving in many different areas. His favorite area of volunteering was as a present member of the Property Management Committee, painting, cleaning, doing yard work, or anything else that was needed (and eating and drinking coffee.)

He was a member of the Superior Masonic Lodge #236 F & AM, Aad Temple Shrine in Duluth, Provost Unit at Aad Shrine, Superior Shrine Club where he served as treasurer for a number of years. He also was a member of the Sons of Norway where he served as Marshall.

Dick is survived by his wife, Arlene, daughter, Jill (Jim McGinnis) Jacobson and son, Craig (Lindsey) Jacobson, all of Superior, WI; one brother, Ronald (Trudy) Jacobson, Green Bay, WI; two nephews, Eric and Douglas and sister-in-law, Linda (Dennis) Aho, Superior, WI.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Harriet and Louis Hanson.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior and continue until the 12:00 PM funeral service with Pastor Greg Gullicksrud officiating.
