Richard J. Peterson

Richard J. Peterson, 76, Superior resident, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Golden Living Center, Superior surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 12, 1935 in Superior, WI to George and Eleanor (Stariha) Peterson.

He served his country in the United States Army.

He was employed as a paramedic with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

Richard was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church.


He loved spending time outdoors. He liked fishing, gardening, wildlife, camping, traveling and model trains.

He is survived by three daughters, Julie (Mark) Jacobson, Linda (Chuck) Pettingill and Brenda (Jim Gray) Peterson, all of Superior, WI; one son, Richard (Deanna) Peterson, Superior, WI; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Compton, Ashland, WI; two brothers, George Peterson and Don (Mary) Peterson, both of Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend of sixty years, Charlie Sullivan who currently resides in Duluth.

Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon in 1997 and his parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior with military honors to be accorded by the American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers for the service will be Charlie Sullivan, George and Don Peterson, Jim Gray, Mark Jacobson and Tim Baum.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Golden Living Center for their care and compassion they had given to Richard.
